AI search visibility for independent hotels

One in three travelers now lets AI pick their hotel. Watermelon Ghost makes sure you’re the answer.

Watermelon Ghost is a Generative Engine Optimization service for independent hotels. We run hundreds of real traveler queries across ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and Gemini, measure how your hotel gets recommended (or ignored), and ship a 90-day plan to become the first name AI suggests in your market.

What is Watermelon Ghost?

Watermelon Ghost is a GEO intelligence service for independent hotels. We measure how ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and Gemini recommend properties in your market — then ship a 90-day execution plan to become the first name AI suggests. Every audit is run by the three founders and delivered with a live strategy call.

Sample findings

Specific, time-stamped, immediately actionable.

Every audit surfaces findings like these — scoped small enough that your team can fix them today.

ChatGPT · Gemini Fix: 15 min

AI thinks you’re closed.

Your hours went missing from Google when the site was rebuilt.

ChatGPT Fix: 30 min

ChatGPT can’t find your address.

Schema.org markup is on the page but not in the shape ChatGPT extracts.

Perplexity Fix: 2 hrs

Perplexity cites a 2019 review.

Your most-recent citation source is a five-year-old blog post.

Gemini Fix: 20 min

Gemini pulls the wrong photos.

Google Business gallery still shows the pre-renovation lobby.

Claude · Perplexity Fix: Blueprint

You’re described as “budget.”

One TripAdvisor snippet is anchoring the language every model uses about you.

All four Fix: 45 min

Two conflicting cancellation policies.

Your OTA listing and your site disagree. AI reports whichever it hits first.

Illustrative patterns from real audits. Every property’s finding list is different — and every one comes with a time-to-fix.

What you get

A score, the field, a plan,
and a re-score.

GEO Visibility Score

A 0–100 GEO Visibility Score across ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and Gemini.

We run hundreds of real traveler queries against ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and Gemini. The score captures how often — and how favorably — your hotel surfaces in the answers they return. A single 0–100 number, meaningful across every hotel in your market.

Competitive Analysis

Competitive analysis: which hotels the AI recommends instead of yours, and why.

For every hotel the AI recommends instead of yours, we capture the language it uses, the citations it leans on, and the sources driving its picks. You see the full competitive frame each model operates within — not just your position, but the logic behind every recommendation.

90-Day Execution Plan

A 90-day execution plan across content, listings, schema, reviews, and PR.

A concrete 90-day playbook your team can run without a GEO specialist. Actions across content, listings, schema, reviews, and PR — each mapped to a specific model behavior it's designed to shift. With effort estimates, sequencing, and expected score impact.

Quarterly Re-Scoring

Quarterly re-scoring: track score movement, new entrants, and model behavior shifts.

Every quarter we re-run the full audit and ship an intelligence brief: score movement, new entrants, model behavior shifts, and the next moves to make. You don't just track progress — you stay ahead of a market that's moving faster than any annual review cycle.

Who runs the audit

A team of three, not a self-serve tool.

Every audit is run and interpreted by the three founders — Georgina, Josh, and Leslie. Every client gets a strategy call to walk through the findings.

No dashboard. No offshore analyst pool. No PDF dumped into your inbox and left to age.

Who we build for

Independent luxury, boutique, and lifestyle hotels.

Especially members of SLH, Leading Hotels of the World, and Design Hotels.

That’s where the AI visibility gap is most commercially painful — and where positioning-language work has the biggest impact on bookings.

Market data

The shift to AI-first travel search is already measurable.

Only 6% of hotels appear in AI search results, while 82% of AI hotel recommendations come from OTAs and editorial media.
Skift
Traffic from AI sources to U.S. travel sites grew 194% year-over-year in May 2026 — a new record high since Adobe began tracking AI traffic in October 2024.
Adobe Digital Insights
ChatGPT hotel referrals convert at 11.4% — more than double the 5.3% conversion rate of traditional organic search.
Similarweb
53% of travelers are comfortable letting AI suggest travel options, but only 8% are comfortable letting AI complete the booking. The planning surface is where the decision is being made.
Expedia Group / YouGov
89% of travelers want to use AI in their future travel plans.
Booking.com
43% of high-income millennials use generative AI in trip planning — the demographic most likely to book premium and boutique hotel stays.

Hotel segments

Where GEO hits hardest.

01

Boutique

Independent hotels competing against branded flags for the same traveler queries — where brand recognition doesn't exist to save you.

Example query: "best boutique hotel in Amsterdam for a long weekend"

02

Urban

City hotels where neighborhood-specific searches — "hotel in Le Marais," "where to stay in Shoreditch" — decide the booking before brand loyalty kicks in.

Example query: "where to stay in Williamsburg for a design-focused weekend"

03

Resort

Destination properties where answering "where should I stay in [region]" is the entire booking funnel — and the AI's first recommendation captures almost all the consideration.

Example query: "best all-inclusive resort in Tulum for a group of eight"

04

Wellness

Spa, retreat, and longevity properties competing on high-intent query language — "best wellness retreat for stress" — where specificity matters more than star ratings.

Example query: "best wellness retreat for burnout recovery in the Catskills"

05

Luxury

Five-star and Leading Hotels properties whose brand authority drives strong validation — but get out-discovered by competitors with better AI optimization.

Example query: "best luxury hotel in Amsterdam with a spa"

Before you ask

The questions we get most.

What is Watermelon Ghost?

Watermelon Ghost is a Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) service for independent hotels. We measure how AI answer engines — ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and Gemini — recommend hotels in a given market, then ship a 90-day execution plan to move a property from invisible to recommended. Founded in 2025, built on Search in Revolt, the first published GEO framework for hospitality.

What is GEO?

GEO stands for Generative Engine Optimization — the practice of optimizing a business’s presence so that AI answer engines (ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini) recommend it when users ask for a recommendation. It is related to but distinct from SEO: SEO ranks pages in a list, GEO influences how a single generated answer names businesses. For hotels, being absent from an AI’s shortlist means the booking conversation never reaches your site.

How much does a hotel GEO audit cost?

Two options. One-Time Audit: $1,800 for the full GEO Visibility Score, competitive analysis, and 90-day execution plan — no ongoing tracking. Quarterly Subscription: $300/month (billed $900 quarterly, 12-month commitment) for the same audit plus quarterly re-scoring, model-behavior tracking, and delta reports. Limited beta pricing is available to founding cohort properties.

How long does a GEO audit take to deliver?

Ten business days from signed engagement to delivered report. We include a 72-hour delivery guarantee on the final report — if we miss the delivery window, you receive a full refund. The 90-day execution plan is designed for your marketing team to run without additional engineering support.
